Inyo National Forest
Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest and Scenic Byway
The White Mountains are the site of the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest known living trees on Earth. Growing in harsh, high-altitude conditions, some Bristlecones are over 4,600 years old- more than 1,500 years older than the oldest giant sequoia. Schulman Grove features an interpretive site and several self-guided nature trails.
The scenic byway is paved from the town of Big Pine to Schulman Grove. Be sure to have water, food, and a full tank of gas, as no services are available along the road. The road is closed in winter.
Directions from Big Pine: Turn northeast onto State Hwy. 168
