Overview

Cheney Reservoir was constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation. Final construction was completed in 1964. Its major uses include fish and wildlife management, recreation, flood control and a water supply for the city of Wichita. The reservoir is located 17 miles west of Wichita on 21st Street. The north end is 12 miles south of Hutchinson. The reservoir complex consists of 9,537 acres of water at conservation pool, 5,249 acres of wildlife area and 1,913 acres of state park.

Activities

  • Boating

    The Ninnescah Sailing Center on the West Shore Area is the "headquarters" for sailing at Cheney. A marina is on the East Shore Area.

  • Bicycling

    Bicycling can be enjoyed on the park roads. There are no specific bike trails.

  • Camping

    There are more than 225 utility camping sites at the park, as well as 275 designated non-utility campsites with amenities. Additionally, the West Shore Area offers seven reservable modern cabins.

  • Fishing

    Fishing is productive for channel catfish, white bass, crappie, striped bass, wiper, and walleye. The park's 22 boatlaunching lanes provide convenient access to the 9,500-acre lake. A handicapped-accessible fishing complex is available at the Toadstool Loop Jetty. Two fish cleaning stations are also offered.

  • Hiking

    The Giefer Creek and Spring Creek nature trails offer hiking of a combined distance of .8 miles.

  • Hunting

    The Cheney Shooting Range is located along Parallel Road on the northwest end of the Wildlife Area. The range is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is closed on all designated holidays that occur over the weekend. These closed dates are posted at the entrance to the facility. Law Enforcement certified officers operate the range when open. Shooting benches, target backers, and target tacks are provided for both the 100 and 25 yard ranges. An ADA accessible bench is provided on each range as well as a uni-sex vault toilet. Hunting is offered in season.

  • Picnicking

    The park is equipped with a shelter house and four picnic/day use areas.

  • RVing

    The park is equipped with modern toilets, 10 restrooms with showers and four trailer dump stations. Several campsites also offer 20, 30 or 50 amp service.

  • Water Sports

    The park supplies four designated swimming areas for visitors.
