Overview

Eisenhower State Park is located on the eastern fringe of the Flint Hills in southern Osage county. In 1990, Eisenhower State Park, formerly Melvern State Park, was renamed by the Kansas legislature to honor the only US President from Kansas. The 1,785 acre area is found at Melvern Lake, a man-made flood control project for the Marais des Cygnes River basin. In addition to the state park, the department maintains a 10,400 acre wildlife area. These areas are open to numerous types of recreation, such as hiking, biking, camping and horseback riding.

Activities

  • Boating

    Melvern Lake offers 6,930 surface acres for watercrafts large and small. Two 9-lane boat ramps with ample parking offer excellent access to the many coves and dam, within two miles of the boat ramps. The park office has boating registration services and information.

  • Bicycling

    The Five Star Bike Trail is five miles of excellent riding.Eisenhower is also home to a burgeoning trails system for horseback riding, biking, and hiking. Crooked Knee Horse Trail offers equestrians a 20-mile excursion through the undeveloped west side of the park. Biking and hiking is available on the horse trails.

  • Camping

    Eisenhower State Park provides 186 utility campsites and five shower houses. Non-utility sites are available for primitive camping in Five-Star, Blackjack, Sailboat Beach, and Omaha Swim Beach. Group camping is available in Abilene Campground. 17 additional sites are available for single reservations. Campers may stay at any one of the campgrounds for up to 14 consecutive days. Visit the park office for more information, including the availability of cabins for rental.

  • Fishing

    Excellent fishing opportunities are available from shore or boat. Anglers can expect to catch walleye, crappie, sauger, white bass, and channel catfish. The park office has fishing regulations and licenses.

  • Hiking

    There is a one mile Interptation Trail open for hikers. Biking and hiking is also available on the 20 mile horse trail.

  • Horseback Riding

    Crooked Knee Horse Trail offers equestrians a 20-mile excursion through the undeveloped west side of the park. Biking and hiking is available on the horse trails. Camping with horses is available in Cowboy Camp and the North loop of Westpoint Campground. The North loop of Westpoint has electricity, water, and corrals at each site.

  • Hunting

    The undeveloped west side of the park offers excellent shotgun and archery hunting by written permission only. Wildlife include white-tailed deer, eastern wild turkey, bobwhite quail, squirrels, furbearers, and waterfowl.

  • Picnicking

    There are several shelters at the state park, some of which, such as Ike's shelterhourse are reservable.

  • RVing

    The park provides 186 utility sites: 81 with water, 37 with sewer hookups, and five shower houses. Campers may stay at any one of the campgrounds for up to 14 consecutive days.

  • Water Sports

    A swimming beach is avalible for visitors seeking water recreation.
