Overview

The Wetland Management District lies in the extreme southwestern portion of the Prairie Pothole Region, encompassing 13 counties in southeastern South Dakota. It is part of Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge Complex, which also includes Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge and Karl E. Mundt National Wildlife Refuge. The lands managed by the district provide extremely important habitat for migratory birds as well as resident species once common to the diverse prairie ecosystem. Thirteen waterfowl species can be found nesting on the district. A total of 213 avian species have been recorded throughout the district. Waterfowl Production Areas are popular places to hunt, fish, and trap furbearers. Limited interpretive facilities are available at the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge headquarters for non-consumptive users.

Foot travel is permitted, but use of motorcycles, jeeps, snowmobiles, and other motorized traffic is prohibited in order to protect wildlife habitat. Camping is not permitted, but adequate facilities can be found in many of the State Parks throughout the district.
