Overview

Lake George NWR is one of six easement refuges administered by Long Lake NWR Complex. The land is privately owned land which has flowage and refuge easements on it to control the management of the wildlife and the water use and manipulation. The land surrounding the site is owned by the Northern Grasslands Research Station, a research area of North Dakota State University. As such, it is a demonstration area for the university for managing grasslands. Most of the land surrounding adjacent to the lakes/wetlands is grazed annually, but under relatively good management practices. Waterfowl and upland nesting birds which are dependent on native prairie habitat do relatively well, except those which depend on undisturbed tall dense cover for concealment.
