Overview

This 320 acre easement refuge is owned by the ND State Land Dept. The refuge is located in northeast McLean County and consists of rolling native prairie habitat with numerous wetlands. The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) easement rights include water flowage and wildlife protection. Under this arrangement, the FWS maintains the natural wetlands from drainage and the area is closed to all hunting. The State of North Dakota rents the land to agricultural cooperators for economic uses. At the present time, cattle grazing is the main use. The 320 acre Otis easement Refuge is adjacent to the 320 acre Otis Waterfowl Production Area (WPA). The WPA is owned in fee title by the FWS. Both wildlife areas compliment each other and are currently managed as one unit under agreement with the state and a grazing cooperator.
