Mammoth Cave National Park
Biking at Mammoth Cave
Mountain Biking
Grab your helmet and get ready to ride! Mammoth Cave National Park is one of the first national parks to permit mountain bikes on select backcountry trails. It is important to note, however, that the park is still in the process of creating regulations and that this privilege is therefore on an experimental basis. Rangers ask that bikers please stop at the visitor center before using mountain bikes on any backcountry trails. It is quite likely that biking regulations will be changing throughout the next several years so it is essential that bikers stay in close contact with park officials in order to avoid miscommunication.
Note: When on the trail, hikers should yield to horses, cyclists should yield to horses and any user should yield when it would be prudent to do so in order to maintain safe conditions or avoid an unsafe situation.
Road Biking
Biking is permitted on any road in the park. The definition of a road includes fire access and other management roads that are not open for public automobile traffic. Opportunities may exist for riders to use certain backcountry roads, however, you must check with park officials first. A mile-long gravel trail designed particularly for biking connects Headquarters Campground with a controlled access road. The park does not provide bike rentals or sponsor any bicycle-related events. Boston Township Trustee Gerald Ritch told board members at the Aug. 27 meeting that it appeared unlikely the township could obtain state Issue I grant money to repair or replace failed septic systems of some township businesses. Ritch said a Summit County official told him Coventry Township was able to obtain money in a similar situation, but septic systems are not considered infrastructure, making it unlikely township businesses would qualify.
