Overview

Located on the edge of the Sandhills and far from the lights of the city, scenic Merritt Reservoir is a popular destination for anglers, hunters and anyone else who enjoys nature and solitude. Fishing season is year-round on this vast 2,905 surface acre lake. Available species in the reservoir include walleye, muskie, largemouth bass, crappie, and yellow perch. There is a campground in the area with primitive campsites. Merritt Dam, a feature of the Ainsworth Unit, Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, is on the Snake River 14 miles upstream from the confluence of the Snake and Niobrara Rivers. Visitors can try whitewater paddling in Snake River if they are looking for a more intense outdoor activity. Merritt Reservoir is open 24 hours a day to the public. There are good access roads that visitors can use to access the reservoir. The irrigation supply reservoir experiences moderate fluctuations.
