This complex of wetlands and ponds cover 1.7 square miles (1105 acres) and is located above Black Canyon Reservoir. Camping (for reservations call 208-398-8211), hiking, and fishing are the major recreation activities for this area. This area is located northeast of Emmett in Idaho. Fish species include smallmouth bass and rainbow trout. Season open year-round.

  • Boating

    There is a boat ramp available.

  • Bird Watching

    This area's flooded fields in the Payette River Canyon make excellent habitat for waterbirds especially in spring and early summer. Ring-necked Pheasant, Gray Partridge, and California Quail are the most common upland gamebirds observed while Canada Goose, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Wood Duck, and Cinnamon, Blue-winged and Green-winged Teal are frequently observed waterfowl species. Wetland habitats also provide ideal conditions for a host of other birds such as Great Blue Heron, Wilson's Snipe, American Coot, Killdeer, and Red-winged and Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Raptors often seen include Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Harrier, Barn Owl, and American Kestrel. Bald Eagle and Snow Goose winter along the Payette River.

  • Camping

    Camping is allowed in the campground, but is limited to no more than 14 days within any 30-day period.

  • Fishing

    Fish species include smallmouth bass and rainbow trout. Also, fishing opportunities exist in the adjacent Payette River.

  • Hiking

    Make sure to take in all of the beautiful views of the natural diversity of vegetation, while hiking around this site.

  • Hunting

    Enjoy game bird hunting opportunities at the WRA. Remember to observe current hunting and fishing regulations. Regulation brochures are available at all Idaho Department of Fish and Game license vendors.

  • Picnicking

    Picnicking is encouraged.



From Emmett, go 13 miles east on Highway 52 (Or from Horseshoe Bend, go eight miles west on Highway 52). Turn south at the Sweet-Ola junction. The northern boundary of the WRA is located one mile south of the junction, where the highway crosses the Payette River.
