Mount Rainier National Park

Sunrise Area

Sunrise lies in the northeastern portion of Mt. Rainier National Park at the end of White River Road. It provides access to hiking, backpacking, mountain climbing, picnicking, camping and viewing exhibits and scenery.

Attractions - Sunrise is a developed area on the northeastern flanks of Mt. Rainier. The site has a visitor center, ranger station, restaurant, picnic area, walk-in camping and many miles of trails. The view from the visitor center is spectacular as it includes the Emmons Glacier, which is the largest in the contiguous United States.

Recreation - The drive to Sunrise along White River Road is an experience in mountain driving. The road winds along the White River then eventually climbs to the subalpine terrain that composes the area. Once you reach the parking lot you'll find a visitor center with interpretive exhibits. The exhibits will give you the knowledge to identify plants and animals that can be spotted along the many miles of trails that begin from the Sunrise complex. Backpacking and camping are also available in this portion of the park as the Wonderland Trail leads through the area and the Northern Loop Trail is also accessible. The Sunrise Camp lies a short distance west of the parking area and is open for walk-in camping.

Climate - July and August in Washington are generally sunny and mild, with the chance of showers. The rest of the year is usually quite rainy, with heavy snowfall from November through April. Rain gear is recommended year round.

Location - The hub of the Sunrise Area lies at the end of White River Road in the northeastern portion of the park. The site lies at an elevation of 6,400 feet in Yakima Park between Burroughs Mountain and the Sourdough Mountains.
