Located 10 miles west of Portsmouth in Suffolk on the Nansemond River, the refuge habitat is composed mostly of tidal marshland. Nansemond NWR provides habitat for migratory waterfowl, including black ducks, mallards and canvasbacks, as well as wading, marsh and shorebirds.
