Recycling Plan Set for National Mall

May 1, 2009, 10:17 am

A recycling program will be introduced for America's "front yard," commonly called the National Mall.

The effort -- covering the area from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial -- will begin with a study of how much of the 4 tons of trash generated daily can be salvaged and reused, officials said.

A $1.1 million gift from Coca-Cola Co. will jump-start the program and help the National Mall catch up with other parks.

In the summer, the National Park Service and its fundraising partners will study the waste generated to see how many and where recycling bins are needed. They hope to place bins by October.
