Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area is a 1,600 acre impoundment on the Niobrara River with an adjacent 612 acres of land. The area offers power boating, picnicking, swimming, fishing, located on the west edge of the Sandhills, about 9.5 miles north of Hemingford.

  • Boating

    Box Butte is a massive 1,600 acre lake that hosts boats of all types. There are two docks available.

  • Camping

    Box Butte offers fourteen 30 & 50 amp non-reservable campsites and 40 primitive campsites.

  • Fishing

    At 1,600 acres, Box Butte presents anglers with a host of fishing opportunities. You can cast off from shore or by boat.

  • Hiking

    After spending a day on the water, head back to land to explore and hike through the more than 600 acres at Box Butte.

  • Picnicking

    With over forty picnic tables and thirty grills, and 4 large shelters available, Box Butte is the perfect place for a large or small picnic gathering.

  • RVing

    There are 14 30 & 50 amp non-reservable campsites available for RVers.

  • Water Sports

    The lake has a small beach and open swim area for visitors to cool off under the hot summer sun.
