Overview

Nestled in New Mexico's beautiful northern mountains, El Vado Lake State Park offers fishing, boating, water-skiing and cross-country skiing. A five-and-a-half-mile scenic trail along the Rio Chama connects El Vado with the nearby Heron Lake. The lake and surrounding area are a major wintering ground for bald eagles and other birds including red-tail hawks, water ouzels, and ospreys.

Activities

  • Boating

    Boating is permitted on the lake, which has two boat ramps.

  • Camping

    There are 25 widely scattered picnic or camping shelters and one large group shelter. A total of 80 developed sites, a modern comfort station with showers, a dozen vault toilets, and 19 electric sites with water and a new playground are available.

  • Fishing

    Quiet coves around the lake are great places to catch trout and kokanee salmon.

  • Hiking

    The five-and-a-half-mile scenic trail along the Rio Chama connects El Vado with nearby Heron Lake.

  • Picnicking

    There are 25 widely scattered picnic or camping shelters and one large group shelter.

    There is a total of 80 developed sites, a modern comfort station with showers and a dozen vault toilets, plus 19 electric sites with water and a new playground.
