
Heron Lake State Park
Overview
A picturesque lake set among tall pines, Heron Lake State Park has been designated as a quiet and peaceful lake. This park is known for its excellent sailing, fishing, cross-country skiing, windsurfing, and hiking. There are also several scenic campgrounds lining the shore of the lake from primitive to fully developed with all services. Access the hiking and fishing trail along the gorgeous Rio Chama from the dramatic caprock stairway near Heron Dam. The 5.5-mile trail which crosses the river by suspension bridge, affords panoramic views and an adventurous route to neighboring El Vado Lake.
Activities
Boating
This park is known for its excellent sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing. Boats operate at no-wake speeds only.
Camping
Several scenic campgrounds line the shore of this scenic lake, both primitive and full developed campsites are available.
Fishing
At the lake, you can fish for record-size trout. Ice fishing is also popular in winter for the arctic set.
Hiking
