Things To Do

A true oasis on the expansive, grassy plains of east-central New Mexico, Oasis State Park is set among cottonwood trees and shifting sand dunes. Although fishing is the park's main draw, the park also has several prairie hiking trails, a peaceful and shady campground, and an abundance of different birds.

  • Camping

Both primitive and developed campsites are available at the park campgrounds.

  • Fishing

Stocked with trout during the winter, the pond is stocked with channel catfish in the summer. Most anglers sit on the shore or bring lawn chairs.

  • Hiking

The High Plains Trail runs along the base of the dunes and through prairie grasses, for about one-and-a-half miles. There is also a walking path of a quarter-mile around the pond, and a nature trail, which wanders through the sand for about one-mile. A paved, fully-accessible trail runs from the parking area to the pond.

  • Picnicking

The pond has several picnic tables, including two with shelters.

Oasis State Park is six-and-a-half miles north of Portales, via NM 467.
