North Country Trail
Difficulty: Easy Other than the distance.
Elevation Gain: 800 Feet (249.4 Meters)
Length, One-way: 18 Miles (30.0 Kilometers)
To begin the 18-mile hike of the North Country Trail, travel to the scenic view and trailhead area 4 miles south of Red House Campground located along ASP 1. You may choose to travel west or north. If you travel west, you'll reach the Pennsylvania state line. Traveling north on the trail, it splits at .5 mile to the 2.5 mile loop trail titled Eastwood Meadows. The rolling terrain is blazed in white and blue (blue markers within the park's boundary). The hike is easy with ascensions and descensions barely noticeable with the exception of a slight change in vegetation. The route is primarily through a forest of ash, maple and hemlock with July blooming red elderberry bushes becoming more prevalent on the higher terrain. Fabulous fern understory extends for miles in such a thick covering that at times it appears you're hiking through a fairy tale forest. Nearing the 5 mile point, the trail joins with the Conservation Trail that originated by the Administration Building. Bear left, continuing along the blue-blazed route. Nearing civilization, you'll hear sounds of nearby campers, see power lines and have the opportunity of taking a spur trail over to the Administration Building. The 18-mile point is reached at Bay State Road and ASP 2.
