Quinault Graves Creek Road and campground will
reopen Friday, Olympic National Park Superintendent Karen Gustin
announced today.
The campground will provide typical winter
season services, with privy toilets and no running water; flush
toilets, and running water will be provided for the
summer season beginning in late March.
“We
are thankful for the patience and support of the greater Quinault
community for restoring access to this area,” Gustin said. “Throughout
the project, our goal has been to
provide for long-term, sustainable
visitor access to the Quinault Rain Forest, while protecting important
habitat and resources.”
During the widely destructive storms of
December 2007, Graves Creek Road was severely damaged in eight
locations along its six miles. It was closed to vehicle traffic,
although pedestrian, bicycle and stock use were allowed. Construction
began in mid-July.
South Shore Road sustained damage from
floodwaters during the same storms; emergency repairs were completed
and the road was reopened to motor vehicles in April 2008.
