Grand Valley

This trail leads eight miles one way from Obstruction Point, 6,100 feet, through the Grand Valley, over Grand Pass to Cameron Creek Trail, 4,750 feet. It follows Lillian Ridge south from the trailhead, ascending and descending along the ridge for two miles to the high point, 6,400 feet. From this point the track crosses Lillian Ridge and descends steeply using switchbacks into Grand Valley.

Three and a half miles from the Obstruction Point Grand Valley Trail is joined by Badger Valley Trail. A short distance south of this junction is the Grand Lake Camp. The camp lies on the western shore of Grand Lake the northernmost and largest of three lakes in this valley.

Until the trail reaches Grand Creek between Grand Lake and Moose Lake it remains above tree level. Immediately before Moose Lake the trail enters subalpine forest. It leads through open meadow and subalpine forest as it follows Grand Creek southwestward then southward to its headwaters.

Approximately one and a half miles beyond Moose Lake the trail begins to climb out of Grand Valley toward Grand Pass. In the half mile to the pass the route gains 775 feet. On the pass McCartney Peak, with its two small glaciers, lies immediately west. Also within view are Lost Peak and Mt. Cameron, at the head of Cameron Creek.

On the southern side of the pass the trail descends along talus slopes for the first half mile. This open terrain allows for expansive views of the Cameron Creek drainage. At approximately 5,250 feet the trail enters subalpine forest above Cameron Creek. It uses switchbacks to lessen the grade of the descent into lower elevation. The track joins the Cameron Creek Trail at 4,430 feet, approximately eight miles from Obstruction Point.
