Overview

Think of Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site as an oasis. Its tall, willowy cottonwood trees provide shade and serenity. Each campsite is clothed with a variety of trees and other plants to give you that private, secluded feeling. The park borders the beautiful John Day River and is surrounded on all sides by some of Oregon's most pristine wilderness areas. You're as likely to have wildlife neighbors as human ones: the majestic Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer are frequent visitors. You can experience the thrill of seeing steelhead rush upriver to spawn. The park lies in the shadow of the Strawberry Mountain Range just a short drive away.

Activities

  • Camping

    Each campsite is clothed with a variety of trees and other plants to give you that private, secluded feeling. All campsites are first come, first-served. Tepees are reservable from mid-April through September. Tepees may be available first come, first-served after September depending on the weather. Call the park during this period to find out if the tepees have been taken down for the season. Campsite open March 1 - Nov. 30. 2 tepees; hiker/biker camp. (541) 932-4453 or (800) 551-6949.

  • Fishing

    Fish for steelhead on the John Day River.

  • Hiking

    Take a relaxing stroll on the nature trail along the river. The trail begins near the tepee parking area and follows the tree- shaded riverbank into an expanded area of the park west of the campground. Ask about when you can see steelhead rushing up river to spawn. A short distance north of the river, the trail leads to a small pond perfect for wildlife viewing. evening presentations in the park's amphitheater from April- September.

  • Picnicking

    Also enjoy the large picnic area near the park entrances. It is open year-round.

  • RVing

    Maximum length is 60 feet and electrical hook up sites are available for rent.

Seasonality/Weather

Open year-round. The campsite open March 1 - November 30th. Discovery season is October 1-April 30, when rates are less than summer rates. Call the park during this period to find out if the tepees have been taken down for the season.
