Yellowstone National Park Lodges will offer “Lodging & Learning” packages this winter in Yellowstone National Park. The park’s winter season begins Dec. 18, 2009 with the opening of the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. The Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel opens Dec. 21, 2009. The lodges provide the only wintertime accommodations within the park. Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel will close for the season March 8, 2010, and Old Faithful Snow Lodge will close March 7, 2010.

The Truman Home in Independence closed Monday for the winter.Officials with the National Park Service, which administers the property, hope to reopen the home to visitors next spring. Until then workers will install new heating, cooling and fire suppression equipment, and also will make interior plaster repairs.

A 91.5-acre forested property known as the DelGrosso Tract has been transferred from the Nature Conservancy to the National Park Service, expanding the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.In 2008, the Conservancy acquired the Sussex County property just east of the Delaware River on behalf of the National Park Service. The Conservancy held onto it until federal funding to re-acquire the property could be secured.

Repair work was under way Wednesday at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the National Mall as a private memorial fund took over landscaping and maintenance of 13 acres from the National Park Service.Over the next two weeks, workers are restoring the flagpole's bronze finish and its decorative base with five military branch insignias. They will also restore the bronze finish for five stands that hold directories that help people find names on famous V-shaped memorial wall, which draws millions of visitors each year.

Thousands may see it from the beaches of Zuma and Malibu, but the experience of the isolated Anacapa Island is a world away, chock full of dramatic views, beautiful sunsets and sunrises and a fascinating history from the Chumash Indians to failed attempts at farming.The volcanic rock sticks out of the Pacific Ocean, 14 miles off the coast, and is inhabited mainly by sea lions, harbor seals, western gulls and brown pelicans. Save for the occasional park ranger or scientist, campers may experience being the only people on the island overnight.

Weekend vacationers, hunters and traveling tourists be forewarned: Road closure season is here. Several popular high-elevation routes in Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest are now closed off for the season.In Rocky Mountain National Park, Fall River Road is gated off for the season, park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson said.

Getting the Black Canyon designated as a national park was a long and difficult journey, but many of those who fought to protect the canyon were on hand Saturday to mark the tenth anniversary of that achievement.A leading champion of the bill that created the park, former Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell, joined former Rep. Scott McInnis and others in an outdoor ceremony overlooking the canyon.

Delaware's congressional delegation is planning to introduce a proposal for the state's first national park.Sen. Tom Carper says the bipartisan plan to be introduced Tuesday would require a few million dollars from the federal government so the park could open in 2011.Delaware is the only state without a national park.Carper says there would be a history-themed park in New Castle and park rangers could then direct visitors to other historical sites and attractions in the area.

Park rangers say two popular routes through Yosemite National Park are closed for the second time this month because of snow and icy weather. Tioga Road, the highest elevation route through the Sierra Nevada, closed Monday to all traffic. Glacier Point Road, one of the park's popular sightseeing paths, is also closed as a storm passes through the region. The two scenic roads also closed due to snowfall in the first week of October, and rangers are evaluating whether they will open again this season.

Leaders of a national park in the Kansas Flint Hills are close to completing a project to obtain a herd of wild bison for visitors of the park to see.A team from the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City this week is observing a buffalo roundup on the 44-square-mile Wind Cave National Park site in the Black Hills region of South Dakota.
