Things To Do


There are three popular recreation sites within the Pine Forest Recreation Area: the Blue Lakes, Onion Reservoir and Knott Creek Reservoir. All three have superb scenery. The Blue Lakes are glacial in origin. Excellent opportunities for fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, primitive camping, mountain biking, and photography exist at every turn. This area is open from June 15 through October 15. Fees and reservations are not needed to access the Pine Forest Recreation Management Area. Other popular recreational activities include: picnicking, horseback riding, climbing, and winter sports.

    Boating may be permitted.

  • Bicycling

    Try one of the excellent mountain bike trails.

  • Auto/Motorcycle

    This is a remote area, with dirt roads which are passable only in dry weather.

  • Camping

    The campgrounds are primitive. There are three total campground areas.

  • Fishing

    This area is a trout reservoir.

  • Hiking

    This beautiful expanse of desert has countless miles of hiking trails.

  • Horseback Riding

  • Hunting

    Check with officials for hunting rules and regulations.

  • Off Highway Vehicles

    Many roads in the area require high clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles. Call ahead for road conditions and rules regarding ATVs, motorcycles, and other OHVs.

  • Picnicking

    Picnic sites are available.

From Winnemucca, drive 30 miles north on US Highway 95, and then 50 miles west on State Highway 140. Turn left at Alta Creek Rd. The Blue Lake trailhead and the reservoirs are about 15 miles form Highway 140.
