Hi Kristan,

The GrandEscalante-Staircase National Monument and Grand Gulch Primitive Area are two separate parks. The Gulch is south of the monument, just above Monument Valley. For more information on the Gulch, check out this website: http://www.utah.com/playgrounds/grand_gulch.htm
Bob--are you referring to the way Bill Clinton designated the Grand Staircase Escalante as a National Monument under the Antiquities Act? I hear it was one of the most politically controversial proclamations in the history of national parks! Many people believed that Clinton’s designation of Grand Staircase Escalante as a national monument was a political ploy to gain votes in Arizona. Enforcing this belief, Clinton won Arizona by a 2.2 margin.
If you have any more information on the way Clinton announced this monument, please let us know!
