Hike of the week: Rocky Mountain National Park offers gems for fall hiking

Oh, the mountains are the keepers of my joy. And hiking in Colorado at Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall is the best. Following are two of my favorite fall hikes. Remember: Consult a map before heading out and invite a friend or two along.

Chasm Lake: At the base of 14,255-foot awe-inspiring Longs Peak, Chasm Lake shines, reflecting Longs' sheer east face, dubbed the Diamond for obvious reasons. The hike to Chasm Lake follows the route to Longs Peak, but splits at the northerly fork that continues to Longs. Hikers to Chasm Lake (go left) get a respite: A downhill stroll past gentle Columbine Falls.

After passing RMNP's supply cabin along the trail, expect a heart-pumping final stretch to the icy lake. Watch for rock climbers scaling one of the many routes on the Diamond.
