Two Aging Bridges near Estes Park to be Replaced

January 13, 2010, 5:48 pm

Construction crews will replace two 72-year-old bridges on U.S. 34 over the Big Thompson River just east of Estes Park.

Colorado transportation officials say the work will shut down the highway for 12 days in February and 12 more days in March. U.S. 34 is a primary route into Estes Park and the adjacent Rocky Mountain National Park.

Scott Zurn, public works director for Estes Park, says state and local officials planned the construction schedule to minimize disruption to tourist traffic.

Town spokeswoman Kate Rusch says if the aging bridges aren't replaced, they would be subject to weight restrictions that could bar some heavy trucks and big RVs.
