Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway
Popular destinations for canoeing, boating, fishing, camping and hunting, the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers offer 252 miles of clean water gliding past a lush green landscape, historic towns and spectacular scenery. Nestled between Minnesota and Wisconsin in a picturesque valley, the St. Croix River flows between bluffs of limestone and sandstone, beginning as a narrow gorge with steep vertical walls, then slowing and widening into the scenic Lake St. Croix. Choose to canoe and camp amid the north woods, or boat and fish surrounded by wooded bluffs and historic towns. This river corridor provides a wealth of scenic views and a haven for wildlife in close proximity to a major metropolitan area. The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway is one of the eight original rivers designated as a wild or scenic river and is the largest scenic riverway east of the Mississippi River.

Reporting from Glacier National Park -- No one knew what to expect on the trail to Grinnell Glacier one late summer morning, but a second bull moose less than an hour out was hardly a good sign. During September and October -- mating season -- it's always best to give the spindly-legged animals plenty of room.

An upcoming National Park Service (NPS) rule change could greatly benefit mountain bicycling by improving the administrative process for opening trails to bicycles. IMBA has been asking the agency to revise its policies since 1992, because the current "special regulations" process is needlessly cumbersome and treats bicycles like motorized vehicles.

On our recent trip to Hawaii we had a feeling that things were less busy than usual. Now there are some numbers to back up our hunch: The national parks in the state saw a drop in attendance of more than 50,000 visitors during the month of October.
