Eagle Lake
The trail to Eagle Lake begins at the Eagle/Mosquito Trailhead at the end of Mineral King Road. The trailhead lies at an elevation of 7,800 feet. From this point the trail ascends steadily along the western side of Mineral King Valley. Shortly after leaving the parking area the trail crosses a foot bridge and Spring Creek. At approximately one mile from the trailhead the path crosses Eagle Creek and continues climbing southward.
The trail reaches the lower rim of Eagle Basin and splits, with the left side leading to White Chief Peak. The right side of the trail leads to Mosquito and Eagle Lakes. Follow the right side of the trail as it leads to the head of Eagle Creek Valley.
In one mile the trail splits again. The right side of the trail leads to Mosquito Lakes. Take the left side, which will bring you to Eagle Lake. After the fork the trail is relatively level for a short distance then begins to gain elevation to reach the lake. It is one and a half miles and 1,000 feet to the lake from this split in the trail. From this point forward the trail leads through an exposed high alpine area. (Sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water are necessities for this trek.)
The lake lies at an elevation of 10,000 feet. Upon reaching the site you'll need to ascend the dam first. This lake was "improved" for water storage in the early 1900's. It was initially carved by glacial activity.
