
Foothills General Forest Area
The Foothills General Forest Area lies in the western portion of Sequoia National Park along the Generals Highway. The Foothills are characterized by low elevation, small oak trees, chaparral and river canyons. Because of the lower elevations the temperatures in the foothills of the Sierras are more mild than other (high elevation) parts of the park. Summers are scorching and dry and winters usually come and go without lasting snow. This region also has the greatest amount of biological diversity.
In addition the the interesting natural features in the foothills many public facilities exist. Two campgrounds in the area, Potwisha and Buckeye Flats, contain 70 individual camping sites. Potwisha is open year-round. The Foothills Visitor Center provides is a great place to begin your visit to the park and discover all there is to see and do. Park headquarters are located within the visitor center building. Hospital Rock lies along Generals Highway and provides visitors with a glimpse of the Native Americans that once inhabited the area. Picnic facilities are available at Foothills Visitor Center and Hospital Rock.

Directions from Ash Mountain Entrance: Follow Generals Highway northward into the Foothills region of the park.
