The Generals Highway connects the two highways that approach Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks park from the west, 198 and 180. It leads approximately 46 miles between the two roads and plays an important role in the Sequoia National Park visitor experience. The highway has a unique character as a mountain road unlike the highways constructed today. A portion of this character is preserved in the 16-mile stretch of road from Ash Mountain to Giant Forest, which contains 130 curves and 12 switchbacks. It is not recommended for vehicles over 22 feet in length.

This winding road connects the attractions that comprise the heart of Sequoia National Park. It was initially constructed in 1926 to connect the Giant Forest to a foothills wagon road. The roads builders had no way of anticipating that it would comprise a busy thoroughfare through a National Park or the amount of traffic it would need to accommodate.

Today the road is under rehabilitation. A plan has been devised and implemented to preserve the integrity and driving experience of the Generals Highway. In addition the unique scenery that surrounds the road, and enhances each park visit, will also be preserved. Construction has begun to stabilize the road, as well as to make its width more consistent.
making loop trips possible. Efforts will be made to minimize the impact this
project will have on your visit, but be advised that you may encounter delays of up to 20 minutes as you enter Sequoia from Highway
198.
