Mineral King Road
Mineral King Road is 25 miles long and leads eastward from Highway 198. The road begins two and a half miles north of Three Rivers at an elevation of 1,146 feet. It winds through the East Fork Kaweah River Valley gaining elevation. Within approximately ten miles of leaving Highway 198, those traveling Mineral King Road will reach the Lookout Point Entrance Station to Sequoia National Park. This entrance station lies at 4,019 feet. This road is not recommended for use by RV's or trailers.
Seventeen miles east of Highway 198 is the winter closure gate on Mineral King Road. From November 1 through May 31 (may vary depending on snowpack) each year the road closes for winter recreation. Beyond this point the road is open to snowshoeing, skiing and hiking only.
The winter closure gate lies two miles west of Atwell Grove. This portion of the road was developed during the mining era, which is what first brought people to this region of California. The Paradise Ridge Trail, Atwell-Hockett Trail, Hockett Parking Area and Atwell Mill Campground are located along this stretch of the road. A mile and a half eastward is Silver City, a private resort community within the park.
Two miles beyond Silver City is the Mineral King Ranger Station, which provides general information and wilderness permits for park visitors. The Cold Spring Campground lies across the road from the ranger station. The end of the road is less than two miles from the campground. At the end of the road is the Eagle/Mosquito Trailhead and Mineral King Pack Station. The road forks at the end with the right fork leading to the trailhead and pack station.
