This is a 1.4-mile loop trail that takes the traveler to the top of Loft Mountain offering a beautiful panoramic view of the mountains. The trail can be fairly steep at times. The path is through a meadow which through succession is becoming forest land. The trail is considered easy to moderate in difficulty.
Shenandoah National Park, 3655 US Hwy 211E. , Luray, VA, 22835-9036, Phone: 540-999-3500
Directions from Front Royal, VA: Skyline Drive travels the entire length of Shenandoah National Park. Mile markers are placed along the right-hand side of the road heading south. They are numbered from north to south beginning at the northern terminus in Front Royal, Virginia. Facilities, trails and park features use the mile markers as points of reference. At mile 79.5, park in the Loft Mountain Wayside parking area. Cross the Drive at the crosswalk. Within a hundred yards from Skyline Drive, the trail forks where you will want to bear right. This trail eventually merges with the Appalachian Trail for just a few feet. At this point, you will want to turn left on Deadening Trail which will take you back to the fork, thereby completing the loop.
