If you are looking for a hike that's not too long with good views, you may want to consider Ivy Creek Overlook. It is only 1.4-miles and it travels through a forest of beautiful mountain laurel, oak and pine. There are several switchbacks and several large rocks to pass, which add interest to the journey. About midway, you can observe Skyline Drive, and at the terminus there is a small reflecting pool.
Shenandoah National Park, 3655 US Hwy 211E. , Luray, VA, 22835-9036, Phone: 540-999-3500
Directions from Front Royal, VA: Skyline Drive travels the entire length of Shenandoah National Park. Mile markers are placed along the right-hand side of the road heading south. They are numbered from north to south beginning at the northern terminus in Front Royal, Virginia. Facilities, trails and park features use the mile markers as points of reference. At mile 77.5, park in the Ivy Creek Overlook parking area where you will begin on the Appalachian Trail from the south end of the lot.
