Balsam Mountain Trail
The Balsam Mountain Trail is a pleasant walk through a forest of hardwoods to its terminus at the Appalachian Trail. This is a historical area abound with old shanties and fields that were once filled with livestock and lumbermen. The Laurel Gap Shelter is available for overnight use with reservations. The trail offers a number of areas for viewing the spectacular Smokeys.

Directions from Blue Ridge Parkway, NC: 10 miles north of Soco Gap on Balsam Mountain Road (closed in winter), off the Blue Ridge Parkway around Milepost 458. Trail begins from the camping area.
