The trail travels off the Appalachian Trail near the Spence Field Shelter. It travels over 9 miles changing with a changing elevation of 3,000 feet. It crosses rippling streams 19 times. Be prepared with waterproof footwear. The trail follows an old railroad grade leading to open meadow areas. There are two connector trails from the base of Lake Fontana, Lost Cove Trail and Pinnacle Creek Trail. At the upper edge of the trail, by traveling the Appalachian Trail a short distance east, you may pick up Jenkins Ridge Trail down to Pinnacle Trail to make a loop.
