Grassy Branch Trail is a challenging trail which begins north off Newfound Gap Road on Kephart Prong Trail. It is located along the Richland Mountain ridge where an overnight shelter may be reserved through the ranger station. Water is available along the route.

Directions from Cherokee, NC: Travel US 411 north which turns into Newfound Gap Road. Begin on Kephart Prong Trail along the Kephart Prong on the north side of the road before the drastic switchbacks. There is a bridge over the Oconaluftee River at Kephart Prong Trailhead. Grassy Branch begins at the Kephart Shelter.
