Acres of sandy hills. Shadows of ripples in the wind-blown sand. Surrounded by mountains on all sides.

No, these visuals do not describe the massive mounds of sand at Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado. These descriptions are not of Death Valley National Park.

These images describe North Sand Hills Recreation Area located 15 miles northeast of Walden. North Sand Hills provides all the fun and excitement of playing in sand without the long drive to southern Colorado or California.

This special recreation area managed by the Bureau of Land Management contains 300 acres of dunes and 1,400 total acres. A Special Recreation Management Area is public land designated for recreational opportunities and that allows the area to have funding and personnel to manage the property.

Hunting and hiking are popular activities at North Sand Hills, but by far the use of off-highway vehicles entices the most people. North Sand Hills is the only off-highway vehicle sand recreation area in Colorado.
