Overview

Sunburst Lake is one of six easement refuges in the Long Lake Wetland Management District. It is 328 acres. It is adjacent to the 580 acre Schiermeister WPA. Rights granted by the easement include flooding, but no entry. The refuge is utilized by waterfowl and other birds as a nesting and migration stop. The refuge is host to sharp-tailed grouse on the higher native uplands and ring-necked pheasants in the wooded coulees and lowland marshes and tall grass habitats. The woodlands, riparian areas along Horsehead Creek, prairie uplands, and riparian wetlands provide for a wide diversity of passerine birds.
