Recently, a group of 40-plus people gathered in front of the Visitor's Center in Yosemite National Park for a quiet yet much-deserved 10-year anniversary celebration of the Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System."When we started 10 years ago, this had never been done," says Vikki Bauer, YARTS chairwoman of the board. "It was a pilot program, and there have been a lot of difficulties. But it has been successful, and we just wanted to celebrate that."

Montana's summer tourism season wasn't as bad as expected - and was far better than in surrounding states and most of the rest of the country. It helped that visitor numbers at the major national parks in Montana soared above those for the 2008 season. Visitation was bolstered by locals vacationing closer to home and by publicity sparked by filmmaker Ken Burns' PBS documentary featuring the nation's parks as "America's Best Idea," said Betsy Baumgart, administrator of the Montana Promotions Division.

The National Park Service has approved a plan to restrict snowmobile numbers in Yellowstone National Park to less than half of last winter's limit. The park on Thursday announced daily limits that will allow up to 318 snowmobiles and up to 78 snowcoaches per day in the park for the next two winter seasons. The park has allowed up to 720 snowmobiles a day into the park over the past five winters, but actual use has been far less.

While Crater Lake National Park is open year-round, the Lodge itself is only open from the end of May typically (it is scheduled to open 5/26 in 2010) through mid-October.  The lodge is closed for this season

Crater Lake receives A LOT of snow up into the spring season and starting again in early fall.  So, if your vehicle is prepared for it, snowy months can be beautiful times to explore the park.  Just make sure to check ahead that the roads have been plowed.  The "Rim Road" is usually in pretty good shape for most of the year.

There is no van or shuttle directly to the lodge.  For reservations or more information call Xanterra at (888) 774-2728.

 Have a great trip!

CODY, Wyo. (AP) - Winter has descended on Yellowstone National Park in full force, blanketing the region that includes northwestern Wyoming, southern Montana and eastern Idaho with snow. Managers of America's first national park say late-season visitors should expect winter weather and driving conditions, including temporary road closures and delays. That goes for the next few days, when storm systems could drop additional snow and could make driving on the park's roads treacherous.
