Sand Hollow State Park

Utah State Parks Offer Snow, Sand and Sun

December 9, 2009, 9:14 am

Utah's 2009-2010 winter sports season is underway and all indicators suggest it will be a good one. Many of our ski resorts were able to open ahead of schedule.

A big storm is working its way across Utah right now, dumping heavy snow at our resorts. Skiing conditions are great, and getting better every day. Snow conditions should be superb by Christmas. Now's the time to book ski vacations.

A number of Utah State Parks also offer great winter activities. For example, Soldier Hollow at Wasatch Mountain State Park ranks among the best cross country ski areas in the US. It was the cross country venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

USA Today lists Soldier Hollow among "10 Great Places to Peacefully Glide Cross Country." Below is an excerpt from the USA Today article.

"Located just 20 minutes from the trendy downhill ski enclave of Park City, Soldier Hollow served as the cross-country ski venue for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. 'Mere mortals can ski the same trails as the world-class athletes — and then head for a Park City cafe to relax and celebrity-watch,' Frado says. The resort has more than 20 miles of groomed trails for all skill levels, and offers spectacular views of the surrounding Wasatch Mountains."

Soldier Hollow also offers the longest tubing hill in Utah.

Winter Sun

Utah state parks aren't just about snow. Several popular parks are located in southern Utah areas where winter days are mild and where the sun shines almost every day of the year.

Snow Canyon, for example, is a contradiction of sorts because it seldom gets snow. It is located near St George and it is a popular winter hiking spot. Snow Canyon also offers a very nice developed campground.

Red Mountain Resort & Spa, a top-rated fitness resort located just outside Snow Canyon, conducts adventure treks into scenic areas throughout southern Utah's national park country. Guests there can participate in hiking, biking, climbing and other activities, while they enjoy superior accommodations and healthy gourmet cuisine.

Sand Hollow, another state park near St George, offers sand dunes that are popular year-round for ATV riding and other recreational activities.

Dead Horse Point State Park, over near Moab, is also a great winter destination offering excellent hiking and biking opportunities. Snow occasionally falls there but it usually melts quickly.

Dead Horse Point is a photographer's delight and some of the most impressive photos are taken during winter when the air is crisp and clear. Very impressive photos can be taken when there is a light blanket of snow at the lookout, with the red rocks of Canyonlands National Park and the Colorado River in the distance.

This is a great time to visit Utah. Ski and play in the snow in northern Utah or enjoy the sun and sand in southern Utah. It's all good.
