At this historic site, a ragtag group of Confederate old men and young boys beat the odds and held off an assault by 5,000 Union cavalry soldiers on a bridge of strategic importance to General Lee's army, then under siege in Petersburg.

  • Bicycling

    Bicycling is permitted, and bike trails are provided.

  • Camping

    No overnight accommodations, however the park is 20 minutes from Staunton River State Park (camping and cabins).

  • Hiking

    Trails are available for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

  • Historic Sites

    Self guided tours of this historically and culturally rich site are well worth the time.

  • Picnicking

    One picnic shelter is available for all day rentals. Picnic shelter is sidewalk accessible. Shelter Amenities: Grills, picnic tables, access to restrooms only when the Visitor Center is open, and a soft drink vending machine. The shelter accommodates 90. There is seating for another 50 near the shelter. The area around the shelter, however, cannot be reserved and is open for use by the general public.


Park is open year-round. The picnic shelter is available weekends only from April 1 to June 15 and Sept. 15 to Nov. 15. The shelter is available seven days a week during the rest of the year.

Eighteen miles east of South Boston. Take Route 92 to Clover. Go approximately five miles to Route 600 and turn left. Go about another three miles and turn right on Route 855.
