Regular tour boat service, absent for years, is returning to Voyageurs National Park.

The National Park Service announced Tuesday that it will spend $1.4 million to build a new 49-passenger tour boat. The boat is scheduled to be launched for its first tour in 2010.

“We’re very excited about it,” said Voyageurs Acting Superintendent Raoul Lufbery, who said the park currently offers tours on pontoon boats at Rainy and Kabetogama, but can only handle small groups. The smaller watercraft are also more susceptible to weather conditions. “Wind and wave action can be really limiting factors.”
