Overview

Windwhistle Campground has 17 campsites and a group area at the eastern edge of Canyon Rims Recreation Area. Scenic vistas of canyon country, and limitless opportunity for exploring on foot or by biking the many dirt roads through the area. Group area can accomodate up to 12 people.Located 38 miles southwest of Moab, Windwhistle Campground is nestled against Roan Bailey Mesa. To reach the campground, drive 32 miles south of Moab on Highway 191 to the Canyon Rims Recreation Area turnoff and go 6 miles west on that road. Situated at approximately 6,000 feet, the campground is somewhat cooler than Moab during the summer. Drinking water is available from early May through late-September. An informative one-mile nature trail starts in the campground. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Activities

  • Bicycling

    While the Hidden Valley Trail and the Portal Trail are marked and maintained as hiking trails, bicycle use is also allowed.

  • Camping

    There are 17 sites available with toilets. There is a group site also for reservation. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Hiking

    The following trails are managed for hiking use: Hunter Canyon, Fisher Towers, Corona Arch, Jewel Tibbetts Arch, Amphitheater Loop, Copper Ridge Sauropod Trackway Interpretive Trail, Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail, Negro Bill Canyon, the Ken's Lake hiking trail system, Trough Springs Trail and the Windwhistle Nature Trail. Hikers also extensively use the Moab Rim Route.

  • Picnicking

    Picnicking is encouraged. Please be considerate of local wildlife and other visitors; do not litter.
