Yellowstone National Park officials to open the gates for snowmobiles

December 15, 2009, 7:45 am

Snow from a storm this past weekend will allow Yellowstone National Park officials to open the gates for snowmobiles tomorrow.

On Friday, officials said thin snow cover over much of the park could have delayed snowmobile and snow coach travel in the park, though visitors would have still be able to enter the park in a guided, wheeled vehicle.

However, park spokesman Al Nash said Monday that the park received good snowfall over the weekend -- 15 inches at the gate in West Yellowstone -- that would allow over-snow travel, beginning tomorrow.

At West Yellowstone, where a daily cap of 160 snowmobiles a day has been set for the season, gates will open at 10 a.m. All winter travel must be done with a commercial guide.
