YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) ― The National Park Service is soliciting comments for a proposed project to improve part of the Heart Lake Trail in Yellowstone National Park. The project will focus on the portion of the trail near its junction with the South Boundary Trail in the vicinity of the confluence of Red Creek and the Snake River. The main intent of the project will be to re-establish trail tread that is prone to erosion.

CODY, Wyo. (AP) - Winter has descended on Yellowstone National Park in full force, blanketing the region that includes northwestern Wyoming, southern Montana and eastern Idaho with snow. Managers of America's first national park say late-season visitors should expect winter weather and driving conditions, including temporary road closures and delays. That goes for the next few days, when storm systems could drop additional snow and could make driving on the park's roads treacherous.

Two years after federal officials announced their "amazing" recovery, grizzly bears near Yellowstone National Park have been given renewed federal protections by a federal judge who expressed concern that climate change, among other factors, could impair the bears' hopes for survival. U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in a 54-page order restored the Endangered Species Act listing for more than 500 bears in and around the park in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho after a coalition of environmental groups argued it was premature to declare the bears "recovered" in 2007.

Yellowstone National Park hosted a record number of visitors this summer. Nearly 2.3 million people came to the park during June, July and August, up 124,000 over the previous summer record of 2,173,371set back in 1999.Nearly 753,000 visitors came to the park this past August. That’s up three percent compared to the August 2008, and just a little more than 11,000 shy of the all-time August record of 764,237 set in 1998.

A section of Yellowstone’s Grand Loop Road has been closed for the season to facilitate a major road construction project.  This work can only be done during the summer and fall, due to the length and severity of winter in the interior of Yellowstone National Park.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - Livestock officials in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho are planning a series of meetings to explain new rules proposed for the animal disease brucellosis in the area around Yellowstone National Park.Brucellosis, which can cause pregnant animals to miscarry, has been eradicated nationwide in cattle but persists in Yellowstone's wildlife. At least seven times in the last decade it's been transmitted to cattle, leading to government-imposed trade restrictions.
