In the rustic tradition of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), DeSoto Resort State Park is accented by rushing waterfalls and fragrant wildflowers. The lodge, restaurant, and cabins are all in the rustic tradition of the CCC. Nestled atop beautiful scenic Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama, this 3,502-acre park also provides modern chalets and campsites, as well as a picnic area, swimming pool, tennis courts, nature center with interpretive programs, hiking trails and hotel and meeting rooms in the DeSoto Resort State Park Lodge.

  • Bicycling

    DeSoto Resort State Park has 11 miles of well-marked and maintained mountain biking trails. Riders of all experiences can have an enjoyable time, with trails ranging from easy to strenuous. Biking is also allowed along the cabin road as well as in the campground. Helmets are required for children 16 and younger.

  • Camping

    DeSoto Resort State Park offers a variety of camping options with 94 full hook-up sites, as well as a primitive campground with 20 sites. Register and check-in at the Country Store & Information Center. Reservations are recommended, especially for holiday weekends.

  • Hiking

    DeSoto Resort State Park has over 20 miles of hiking trails, some including views of dramatic waterfalls. The best time to see the falls is during spring, late fall, and winter.

  • Off Highway Vehicles

    Roads are available for scenic drive through park.

  • Picnicking

    DeSoto Resort State Park offers a peaceful picnic area, with tables and grills provided. An accessible table is available, as well are three reservable picnic shelters.

  • RVing

    The Improved Campground offers 94 full hook-up sites, including 50/30 amp service, cable TV hook-up, water, and sewer. The sites average 16 feet wide by 60 feet deep, so there is plenty of room for large RVs. RV storage is also available.

  • Tennis

    Tennis courts are conveniently located near the pool, in order to cool off after a competitive match.

  • Water Sports

    DeSoto Resort State Park has a variety of water sports, from swimming in the pool (open seasonally), swimming in the Little River, or fishing. The Little River provides excellent fly fishing opportunities. Be sure to check with the park for regulations.


Several seasonal waterfalls can be found on the trails of DeSoto State Park. The best time to see the most water flow is usually in spring, late fall, and winter.



Located in the Northeast corner of Alabama. From I59 Northbound take Exit 218 off ramp, turn right on ALA 35 South. Go to the first red-light and veer left. Go to next light and turn left on Gault Avenue. Go through downtown Ft. Payne about a mile and turn right on ALA 35 next to Union Park. Travel up the mountain, turn left at a flashing caution light on top of lookout mountain. Go 5 miles on CO. Rd. 89 and enter Desoto State Park. Park Lodge is the first right on Blalock Drive and the Country Store is about a quarter of a mile down Co. Rd. 89 on the left.


The closest major airport is Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport. A variety of car rental agencies are available there.
