Gear Review: Warm and Cozy with the Tilley Aviator

Flaps up or down? Guaranteed not to wear out for life, the TWA1 Aviator Hat is exactly what you’d expect from the Tilley name. A Canadian product, the aviator is ready to withstand some of the world’s harshest cold winters. The old school looking hat is specially treated to repel rain and snow.

The ideal winter hat, this bad boy will keep the old noggin warm and dry no matter what Mother Nature throws at you. Take it winter camping, snowshoeing or even when you are walking to the store.

No matter what you’re doing in the winter, you need protection. From walking your dog to going hunting, the cold can become dangerous. Frostbite often occurs in the extremities first, so keeping your ears covered is crucial. Depending on the temperature, it can take just minutes to start setting in. If you spend a large amount of time outdoors, this puppy is a must have.

The best way to survive the harsh winter winds is a hat with flaps. Protect your ears and trap that crucial head heat. Throw away the earmuffs and knit cap. With 100% wool on the outside, I was feeling toasty in no time. The adjustable leather straps that fit right to your chin ensure that you won’t be chasing your runaway hat through a snowbank.

The fact that this hat made me feel like I suddenly had the special ability to fly a WWI plane is just an added bonus. The earflaps and forehead warmer are made of shearling and the satin inside won’t irritate even after hours of wear. With a great design and comfy feel, you might want to watch out: the snowman you are building might just try and snatch that hat right off your head!
