Alternative Spring Break at Grand Canyon National Park
Even Grand Canyon National Park is getting in on the spring break action this year. Beginning on March 15, 2009, two groups of college students will spend a week of their spring break volunteering at Grand Canyon National Park. They have the opportunity to make a difference with this environmental service project.
According to The Student Conservation Association, sponsor of the program, "Volunteers will set up camp at Mather Campground on the South Rim and spend their days hiking along some of the Canyon’s most beautiful trails while accomplishing important vegetation projects, as well as removing graffiti from some of the Park’s most important cultural sites."
This is the second annual Alternative Spring Break (ASB) hosted by Grand Canyon National Park. According to the National Park Service, 2009 ASB participants will work on several projects, "including preparing the area around the Desert View entrance station for plant restoration which will begin later this year" and " work on continued maintenance of the vegetation restoration project along the recently rehabilitated Hermit Road."
