Shades State Park is that peaceful place you've been looking for. Located about 17 miles southwest of Crawfordsville, it is a favorite for hikers and canoeists. The beautiful sandstone cliffs overlooking Sugar Creek and numerous shady ravines provide the backdrop for your journey through this nature lover's paradise. Adjacent Pine Hills Nature Preserve affords spectacular topography for those willing to take a fairly long hike.

  • Camping

    The non-electric campground is equipped with flush toilets, hot water and showers. There are no modern hookups. Occupancy is limited to 14 consecutive nights. Reservations are available through the Central Reservation System. Backpack and canoe camping is seasonal and avalible on a first come, first-served basis. Inquire at the gatehouse or park office for openings.

  • Caving

    Not available.

  • Fishing

    Bass, bluegill, etc. can be fished at the park. A state license required.

  • Hiking

    There are approximately 12 miles of easy to rugged trails. Hiking trails that have ladders are difficult to negotiate with small children and pets.

  • Picnicking

    The picnic areas contain tables, grills, toilet facilities, playground equipment, playfields and shelters. Reservations for shelters available through the Central Reservation System.
