Overview

Sand Hills State Park, a 1,123 acre natural area, has been preserved for its sand dunes, grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. Popular activites at the park are hiking and horseback riding. Other activities include hunting, bird watching, wildflower walks, jogging and just simple relaxation in the country. There are eight distinct trails within the park which are broken down into interpretive, hiking and horseback rinding trails. Vehicle permits are required on all vehicles parked at Sand Hills. Annual vehicle permits are also available through the Cheney State Park office. Construction is currently under way for a new campground at the park. Upon completion in the summer of 2011 it will offer a 10-acre pond and 50 campsites, some with corrals for horses. Please check the park website for updates on the campground construction.

The trails total a distance of 14 miles and are open throughout the year. Most trails start from four parking lots located on 56th Street or 69th Street. Visitors are limited to walk-in and horse trail access to help protect the area's natural features.

The park is north of Hutchinson on K-61. It can be accessed off of 56th or 69th street's.
