Things To Do

Overview

Dr. Walker, a physician and surveyor from Virginia, was the first to lead an expedition through the Cumberland Gap. Most people recall Daniel Boone when thinking about explorers, however, in 1750 Walker passed through the gap and went on to explore Kentucky. Dr. Thomas Walker State Historical Site celebrates this pioneer and explorer and a replica of the cabin he built stands on the 12-acre site. The grounds include mini-golf, gift shop, picnic shelters, playground, and lighted basketball court. The house and the surrounding area may be toured year round, and there are a variety of facilities to enjoy while there. Park grounds are open year-round. The gift shop is closed Mon & Tues, Nov 1 - Mar 31.

  • Historic Sites

A replica of the cabin constructed by explorer and physician Dr. Thomas Walker stands on a twelve-acre tract six miles southeast of Barbourville. Located on Ky. 459 off U.S. 25E, the cabin supposedly stands on the site of the original structure. It is here in 1750 that Walker laid claim to the surrounding land by building a small cabin. The Barbourville Post of the American Legion became interested in honoring the memory of Walker. They campaigned to make the traditional site of the Walker cabin a state shrine. The American Legion and the Barbourville community donated the twelve-acre tract to the commonwealth. On June 20, 1931, the Dr. Thomas Walker State Shrine became a part of Kentucky Parks. Come visit the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site and follow in the footsteps of the famous--and not so famous--Kentucky pioneers.
